Achilles and Patellar Tendon Loading during Gait Measured Using a Non-invasive Ultrasonic Technique
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION In vivo measurement of tendon and ligament loads remains a challenge. Forces acting on these structures during exercise have been either estimated indirectly using EMG and inverse dynamics or measured by means of invasive techniques [2]. Recently, a non-invasive technique has been proposed, based on the measurement of the velocity of ultrasound (US) propagation in the tendon [1]. It has been demonstrated that this velocity is dependent on the force applied to the tendon (Fig. 1A). In this paper we report preliminary results of measurements performed on the Achilles tendon and patellar tendon in humans during walking.

Are Sport-Specific Profiles of Tendon Stiffness and Cross-Sectional Area Determined by Structural or Functional Integrity?
The present study aimed to determine whether distinct sets of tendon properties are seen in athletes engaged in sports with contrasting requirements for tendon function and structural integrity. Patellar and Achilles tendon morphology and force-deformation relation were measured by combining ultrasonography, electromyography and dynamometry in elite ski jumpers, distance runners, water polo pla...

Background: This study aimed to introduce a modified technique for minimally invasive Achilles tendon (AT) rupture repairusing gift box sutures. The preliminary clinical and functional outcomes were investigated among a number of patients. Methods: In a consecutive case series study, 24 patients with acute AT rupture underwent modified minimally invasiveAT repair using two mini...
متن کاملInfluence of a lower leg brace on traction force in healthy and ruptured Achilles tendons.
BACKGROUND we investigated how ruptured Achilles tendons are loaded in a brace. There is an ongoing discussion whether patients should be recommended to bear weight on the injured limb. However, little is known about the effects of bracing on tensional loading of the healing Achilles tendon: it is uncertain if load-bearing actually stresses the Achilles tendon inside a brace. METHODS we measu...
متن کاملSport-Specific Capacity to Use Elastic Energy in the Patellar and Achilles Tendons of Elite Athletes
Introduction: During running and jumping activities, elastic energy is utilized to enhance muscle mechanical output and efficiency. However, training-induced variations in tendon spring-like properties remain under-investigated. The present work extends earlier findings on sport-specific profiles of tendon stiffness and cross-sectional area to examine whether years of distinct loading patterns ...
متن کاملBiomechanical Assessment of Patellar Advancement Procedures for Patella Alta.
Crouch gait deformity is common in children with cerebral palsy and often is associated with patella alta. Patellar tendon advancement typically is used to correct patella alta and restore normal knee mechanics. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanical strength of surgical constructs used for fixation during patellar advancement procedures. This study used a cadaveric model to ...
